Fish Catches by FAO Fishery Statistical Areas

This facility provides free access to GIS data on European fish catches. View the fish catch data on an interactive map of Europe and search fish catch sites and locations. Alternatively, download Esri compatible GIS files (Geodatabase or Shapefile). Datasets are also available via OGC compliant web feature service (WFS) or web map services (WMS). The metadata featured here can be downloaded as XML.

EMODnet EMODnet Human Activities: Fish catches by FAO statistical area

Resource Identification Information

Abstract
The geodatabase on fish catches in the EU was created in 2015 by Cogea for the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). It is the result of the aggregation of EUROSTAT's fish catches datasets fish_ca_atl 27, fish_ca_atl 34, fish_ca_atl 37, fish_ca_main_h. EUROSTAT data have been related to FAO's georeferenced fishing statistical areas. Fish species have been grouped by EUMOFA's larger aggregations such as EUMOFA's Commodity Groups (CG) and Main Commercial Species (MCS). Tonnes live weight is provided for each fish species caught in EU fishing statistical area, by year of reference, fish species, CG, MCS and country. The dataset is updated yearly, as soon as new data from EUROSTAT is released. It covers a time series from 1950 to 2016. Compared with the previous version this new version includes data for 2016, as well as the new Main Commercial Species identified by the EUMOFA in 2018.

Lineage
Lineage statement
EUROSTAT datasets on fish catches (fish_ca_atl 27, fish_ca_atl 34, fish_ca_atl 37, fish_ca_main_h) were related to FAO statistical areas for fisheries purposes using a one-to-many relationship class. All information is pre-validated by EUROSTAT and FAO.In EUROSTAT datasets some catches are not allocated to a specific fishing region. For this reason in some cases it may be possible that, in the Geodatabase, the sum of sub-levels totals differs from the corresponding figure at the upper level of aggreagation. The complete dataset is available in excel format.
