Microalgae

This facility provides free access to GIS data on microalgae production sites in European seas. View the microalgae production sites data on an interactive map of Europe and search microalgae production sites and locations. Alternatively, download Esri compatible GIS files (Geodatabase or Shapefile). Datasets are also available via OGC compliant web feature service (WFS) or web map services (WMS). The metadata featured here can be downloaded as XML.

EMODnet Human Activities, Algae Production

Resource Identification Information

Abstract
This dataset stems from the BIOMASS project (https://ec.europa.eu/knowledge4policy/projects-activities/jrc-biomass-assessment-study_en). Its aim is to build a reliable database to characterize the algae sector and to support informed European policies on Blue Growth and Bioeconomy. In the framework of this project, a joint workshop between JRC, FAO and the COST Actions Phycomorph and EUalgae was organized, where the knowledge gaps and needs regarding algae biomass production were discussed. As a first step in this project information on the location of the production facilities, group of produced organism (macro/microalgae) and production method (Fermenters, Photobioreactors, Open ponds, Semi Open ponds, Photobioreactors and open ponds, Photobioreactors and fermenters, Pilot, Harvesting; land-based, off-shore and coastal Aquaculture, Integrated multi-trophic or not) have been collected in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and UK. The list of European algae producers is based on the list provided by European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) and combined with JRC list

Lineage
Lineage statement
Information was collected by the JRC of the EU Commission from companies' websites. Then companies were asked to confirm the data. The data are 'Confirmed' in case companies replied to the emails and confirmed the collected data. The data are 'Estimated' in case the companies did not reply to the emails. This information is available in the 'Position info' field. Cogea has created a shapefile and a geodatabase from the tabular data collected by the JRC. The original dataset by the JRC was submitted through the EMODnet Data Ingestion project.
