Shellfish Production

This facility provides free access to GIS data on European shellfish production. View the shellfish production data on an interactive map of Europe and search shellfish production sites and locations. Alternatively, download Esri compatible GIS files (Geodatabase or Shapefile). Datasets are also available via OGC compliant web feature service (WFS) or web map services (WMS). The metadata featured here can be downloaded as XML.

EMODnet Human Activities: Shellfish production areas

Resource Identification Information

Abstract
The dataset provides information about the location of shellfish farms. It relies on the EUROSHELL project (http://www.euroshell-fp7.eu/Mapping-with-Sextant/Catalogue) for France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK (for England and Wales only). Euroshell data come from professional, scientific and governmental sources (Associazione Mediterranea Acquacoltori in Italy, the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority in Ireland, the Comité National de la Conchyliculture and IFREMER in France, Wageningen in the Netherlands). Data for other countries were not available in the Euroshell database so we used the lists of registered production sites under Council Directive 2006/88/EC on animal health. Points represented in the map correspond to different definitions depending on the source. They represent farm sites in Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK while they represent the centre of production areas for France and the Netherlands.

Lineage
Lineage statement
The geodatabase for shellfish production areas in the EU relies on various sources:- the EUROSHELL project (http://www.euroshell-fp7.eu/Mapping-with-Sextant/Catalogue) for France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and England;- the data collected by MS under the framework of Council Directive 2006/88/EC for animal health status ( http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/liveanimals/aquaculture/register_aquaculture_establishments_en.htm) for Scotland, Denmark, Greece and Spain. The harmonisation work involved the following steps:- Identify species when available, translate into English and homogenise into standard definitions. Details provided in the datasets vary from detailed scientific names to national common names. The data provided here uses the following common names and their different combinations (mussels, oysters, clams, cockles, scallops).- Identify and eliminate duplicates: for the purpose of the Council Directive 2006/88/EC, several 'establisments' may be registered for the same site. In that case, they are merged into one single record (each unit is identified by a name and its geographic coordinates);- Indicate the site typology, which depends on the source: farm sites (provided by Euroshell and not coming from the list of registered establishments under Council Directive 2006/88/EC), registered sites (data coming from the list of registered establishments under Council Directive 2006/88/EC), production area (France and the Netherlands);- Indicate the position information: "Original" for farm sites and registered sites, "Polygon Centroid" for production areas;- Convert all data sets into the same reference system (WGS 84);- Calculate the distance to the coast and indicate whether the point is 'at sea' or 'within the coastline' (may happen in Estuaries and coastal wetlands for instance). Data are missing for Germany (significant mussel production), Sweden (small mussel production), Portugal (very small oyster and clam production) and Slovenia (small mussel production). According to available FAO, EU and national statistics, there is no shellfish farming in other MS.
