EMODnet Human Activities: Status of Bathing Waters

Resource Identification Information

Abstract
The geodatabase on status of coastal and transitonal bathing water categories in the EU was created in 2015 by Cogea for the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). It is based on the dataset "Bathing Water Directive - Status of bathing water" provided by The European Topic Centre on Water and made available by the European Environment Agency at https://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/bathing-water-directive-status-of-bathing-water-9. The data set presents the latest information as reported by the Member States (EU28) for the 2016 bathing season, as well as some historical data since 1990, and is available for viewing and download on EMODnet - Human Activities web portal (www.emodnet-humanactivities.eu). The geographic coverage is: Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom. The whole EEA datatset is also available for download purpose (xlsx file). It includes data on the other two categories of water sampled (river, lake) toghether with data on bathing waters status in Austria, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

Lineage
Lineage statement
The dataset is originally provided as XLS files, one for each reporting country. We have collated all files in a single excel sheet. In the raw data, the status of bathing waters is assest according to two different classifications, the "old or transitional period" and the "new" classification. Reporting countries have not adopted the new classification at the same time. We have converted all data to the new classification, based on the criteria suggested at http://www.eea.europa.eu/themes/water/interactive/bathing/state-of-bathing-waters. Finally, we have loaded the single spreedsheet into a feature class georeferencing bathing water stations.
